"WIN FIRST, FIGHT LATER"
HAGAKURE the Book of the Samurai

The phrase, Win first, fight later can be summed up in two words,
"Win beforehand."
The resourcefulness of times of peace is the military preparation for times of war. With five hundred allies one can defeat an enemy force of ten thousand

That's when you are creating the business plan, and raising money. That's when you start looking for the next job. Don't wait to get laid off of fired. Win first!! Crackberry Confessions

In a brilliant attempt to embrace their addictive image, Blackberry has created Crackberry Confessions(in a corporate kind of way)...and we are feeling it.

It was a bonus to look up and see that a good friend, the prototypical 21st Century Go Getter, Kevin Carroll, was tapped for these new Blackberry ads. I'm amazed at KC's "corporate'ability!!" Last year his quote was featured on Starbucks cup. Now he's reppin' Go Getters Worldwide on how the Blackberry helps him manage his busi-life (work+fam+fun)

If you've read Issue #1 of 21st century hustle. We talked about KC and his book, Rules of the Red Rubber Ball, which illustrates in very simple terms how to turn your passions into your life & career. Kevin's Passion was playing, which is represented by that red rubber ball ( we used to called it a kickball). Imagine taking the joy you felt as a kid when a simple red bouncy ball appeared on the scene, and turning it into a career. You know, getting the life you love through the things you love. That's what KC is preaching to people, corporations, & kids all around the world.

check his blog!!

The same series features another guy that I once met, Shawn Baldwin CEO, Capital Management Group. A cool cat out of Chicago that gave me some leads on raising $$$ in the middle of a party. Check his video out

Inc'd Out Sunday #1

The Good Folks at Inc. Mag always get it right when it comes to showing the attainability of success in business. Each month they do a section called How I Did It , which interviews successful entrepreneurs on their life.... If you are any kind of Go Getter, Hustla, Visionary, Entrepreneur, etc. You should click here and read All of the stories... , but we'll sample a couple...here's the intro to the one on Vicky Stringer, Owner of the street-lit empire, Triple Crown Publishing.

Redemption doesn't come easy.

"Triple Crown Publications is the first name in "hip-hop lit," a booming genre of raw, gritty urban fiction, sold everywhere from street corners to small African American bookstores to Barnes & Noble. Vickie Stringer started Triple Crown with exactly one asset: the fictionalized story of her life, which she wrote in the federal penitentiary while serving five years for selling a kilo of cocaine to a police informant in Columbus, Ohio. That book, Let That Be the Reason, and the follow-up, Imagine This, each spent more than a year on the Essence paperback bestseller list. As her reputation grew, Stringer started publishing other unknown authors, and then representing them when the big publishing houses came calling. How Stringer went from drug queen to federal prisoner 63752-061 to owner of a $1.8 million company with 36 titles by 25 authors is an amazing story, one that's worthy of Triple Crown Publications."

Now go read the Rest!!!

Inc'd Out Sunday #2: Percy Sutton

The second Inc. "How I did It" story, we want to highlight, is on the legendary Percy Sutton who owns a bizillion companies including, the New York radio station, WBLS (Home of The Wendy Williams Experience). If you've never heard of him you should definitely click here to read the entire piece. Here's the intro...
"At the height of the civil rights movement, Percy Sutton was a bona fide prince of Harlem: lawyer for Malcolm X, president of the Borough of Manhattan, a prominent and compelling presence. That's the Sutton most New Yorkers are familiar with. Less visibly (because nearly anything is less visible than Sutton's political life), he was and is a try-anything entrepreneur. Raised in Texas by parents who were educators, business owners, and community leaders, Sutton is the youngest of 15 children, all of whom went to college. As he built his New York law practice, he also built other businesses, including Inner City Broadcasting, which now owns 19 radio stations. In 1980, he bought the legendary Apollo Theater, on Harlem's 125th Street, spurring the revitalization so evident in Harlem today. More recently he co-founded the IT company Synematics, where he holds the title of chairman and, at age 86, remains involved in day-to-day operations."

Now go read the rest of this one too!!

Quote of the Day: Gabriel A. Tolliver

"Who Dares Wins."

" Improvise.Adapt.Overcome."

-Gabriel A. Tolliver, writer.director.producer.author (Submitted via gmail)

We usually only do one quote at a time, but Gabe's double feature seemed more powerful together than apart. So we'll break them down as package...

Jump out there and do something. Take the chances. Its like everybody wants to win but not too many people want to do what it takes to get there. Don't be scared... Be bold in your approach. Dare yourself to accomplish your dreams and conquer your fears. Those that do will inevitably reap the Rewards of doing so. However In taking chances and going for it all there are always Risk, Obstacles, Trials & Tribulations Therefore, it is mandatory that you be able to switch gears, learn, unlearn and relearn. In doing so you will be prepared to conquer all of the challenges you'll face after you Dare yourself to jump out in there in pursuit of whatever it is you desire.

Thank Gabe for the quotes.

Quote of the Day:Nairobi Morgan

"Sometimes you have to starve in order to eat."
-Nairobi Morgan-Editor-In-Chief,
www.Strictlyfitteds.com
(as told to Me 4/25/07)

The way he explained the quote was:
It was him and two other guys doing Production Assistant work on videos and one day they became collectively fed up with the low pay ($100 a day) and grunt work. "We couldn't do it anymore."

So they made a hustler's agreement to see which one of the three could get to a thousand dollars a day...The plan was simple, "If anybody gets a call about PA work, turn it down. Tell them we don't do this work anymore we do something else and here's our price." The risk was that they were not going to make any money until their new projects picked up, however Nai says, " It worked,I was second to get to $1,000 per day."

You get what you ask for, but you might go hungry in the meantime...But you do get it. And when you got it, its all good.

Dimitrious in New York Magazine

Congrats to Kareem Collie and Donald Franklin II, on the look they received in New York Magazine last week. The two are partners in Dimitrious, Inc.. a design firm based in Brooklyn (also the design team behind 21st Century Hustle Magazine's next 2 covers).

The Dynamic Duo was caught on the streets of Manhattan headed to a meeting when the reporter roped them into a short interview about style and fashion. However, them being Go Getters on the grind, it trancended into a business conversation.

An excerpt from the interview:

Do your looks help your business?
DONALD: When people meet us for the first time, before we even open our mouths, they get excited. They want to work with us. It's a certain atmosphere that we bring, a certain aura. It's all very connected.
KAREEM: I had a client walk into a meeting one day and say to me, "If you had come in here dressed any other way, I would ask to see your portfolio. But I can tell by the way that you're dressed, that you're sharp, and that you're on it. Let's just do it."

Quote of the Day:

"Don’t allow your life to become just a dead ritual. Let there be moments, unexplainable. Let there be a few things which are mysterious, for which you cannot supply any reason. Let there be a few doings for which people will think you are a little crazy. A man who is a hundred percent sane is dead." - Osho

Real Talk:Cathy Hughes

This is an intriguing video of Cathy Hughes, Founder & Chairwoman of Radio One, giving the Tavis Smiley Town Hall meeting the "Bizness." Towards the end is where it gets good...She basically acknowledges the entrepreneurship and success of the of Hip Hop generation and the war that exisits between them the media and the "black intelligencia." She gets mad props for saying(pre-Imus) what no one else is willing to say(post-Imus).

The Writing is on the Wall

A piece from Jason Douglas Griffin from the increase-decrease crew, that I thought was powerful. You gotta love it.

The painting is an elaboration of writing scrawled on a wall, that says (as far as i can tell)
"People often ask do you have a job. I reply 'why yes' As a matter of fact I Love My Job!"

Thoughts: Super Sperm

"You have to want it harder than anyone else."

If you are going to sign up for "Any" role or position you have to prepare yourself to go harder than anyone else could even imagine. Its like this- I figure, the mere fact that you are here is the proof...You had to defeat millions of other sperm cells trying to beat you to be you. So what'd make you think that it stops there. IT DOESNT.

Everyday, there're going to be forces that will come and block your game like a conterceptive. Therefore, you have to be strong in mind, soul and heart to get to the goal. You have to ask yourself, can I be the best in the world at this? If the answer is yes then you ask-What will that take? Then you proceed to doing everything it takes to be the best at it.

If the answer is No...you might want think about doing something different. For, "if you aint in it, to win it/ might as well dig a hole and jump in it/cause your game's dead and finished before you even begin it." -Shine On (circa 1998)

Monday Motivation: Don't Stop Get it, Get it.

Thought that some of my people in the struggle would appreciate this --Especially on a Monday.

Robert Greenberg, CEO of Skechers on Donny Deutsch's The Big Idea laying it down about Never Giving Up. If you know about The Big Idea, then you already know it's probably the best program on TV for Go Getter's. If you've never seen it, Donny just has people on talking a bout how, and why they came up with something BIG. Straight motivation all the time. You will soon find out that its a 21st Century Hustle favorite, as you will see many clips over time(you've been warned)

Maslow & The Modern Go Getter( Part 1)

It's not easy as it looks on the colorful pyramid up there. Self Actualization is not achieved by everyone, actually very few people get to that point. The 21st Century Hustle theory is that people are now taking a more active aproach to achieving SA. So over the course of 21st Century you will encounter more, and more people who have "Self Actualized." Over the course of the weekend we will kick it about the big Hommie Maslow, and how Self Actualization fits in to your grind.

Bevy sent me a SA manifesto that we will break up into parts so you can begin on your road to getting yourself Actualized.
I'm not sure where she got it from...but what the hell....Game is Game...Getsome.

1.Realistic Realistically oriented, a Self-Actualizing (SA) person has a more efficient perception of reality, and has comfortable relations with it. This is extended to all areas of life. A Self-Actualizing person is unthreatened and unfrightened by the unknown. He has a superior ability to reason, to see the truth, and is logical and efficient.

2.Self Acceptance Accepts himself, others and the natural world the way they are. Sees human nature as is, has a lack of crippling guilt or shame, enjoys himself without regret or apology, and has no unnecessary inhibitions.

3. Spontaneity, Simplicity, Naturalness Spontaneous in his inner life. Thoughts and impulses are unhampered by convention. His ethics are autonomous, and Self-actualizing individuals are motivated to continual growth.

4. Focus of Problem Centering-- A Self-actualizing person focuses on problems and people outside of himself. He has a mission in life requiring much energy, as it is his sole reason for existence. He is serene, characterized by a lack of worry, and is devoted to duty.

To Be Continued...

Speaking of Maslow and Go Getters

Rush Russell drops his new book "DO YOU " on APRIL 24, 2007. I've attached Russell's description of the book in his own words>>>Press Play!

powered by ODEO

I haven't read it yet but it sounds like a Go Getter's version of Kurt Goldstein's "The Organism," and Abraham Maslow's "A Theory of Human Motivation," which were both theories on Self Actualization. I remember Maslow from school, but revisiting Self Actualization as a grown ass man, was really great for the Go Getter tool box.

Here are Russell's 12 laws to success:
• Always Do You
• Have a Vision and Stick With It
• Get Your Mind Right
• Stop Frontin’ and Start Today
• Never Give Less Than Your Best
• Surround Yourself With The Right People
• There are No Failures, Only Quitters
• Science of Success: Plant the Good Seeds
• You Can Never Get Before You Give
• Successful People Stay Open to Change
• Be Powerful, Be Heard
• Spit Truth to Power

True Pocket's Law's of Coming Up!!!

Thoughts:Damien Lemon

"Never accept no from someone who can't tell you yes." -Damien Lemon, Advertising Rep, Vibe Magazine

Wise words from big hommie D.Lemon at "The Vibes..."

When you have something to sell. It is extremely important that you identify the decision makers. When I first moved to New York in 1999 i knew all of these cats, that would be like "Yo when you get here im going to do this, that, and the third...blah, blah, blah." But what i found out was that even if they wanted to they couldn't do any of the things they promised, because they lacked the power of yes. they would eventually have to go to someone else for the nod. and on most caases they would never make that move to the decisionmaker because they already had a laundry list of request for them already and my request was at the bottom of the list. So, after weeks of calls, meetings, and proposals they would end up just saying NO.

So identify the connect quickly, if they can't say yes, go get another connect-Quickly. Or be prepared to accept the lesson.

Hot Shvitz for Cool Chicks

Big Shouts to Leslie Hall for recognizing a need and "Actualizing" her vision. Her boutique Shvitz, which is Yiddish for Sweat(as in Sweatsuit) sells ladies "comfort wear" (like the stuff the celebs are always wearing in the paparazzi shots).

Leslie says: "I would always get these brands in LA but i couldn't find them in NY, and when I did, I would have to go to 2 or 3 different places. So i thought, why not put all of these brands in one shop?"

NY Post says:"Though it's only been open for a few short weeks, Leslie has already placed multiple reorders for the in-high-demand luxe-priced thermals, hoodies and sweatpants from hard-to-find celeb-fave labels like Primp, Grail, Rebel Yell, Hummel and Joystick." -

Thoughts: Kings Stay Kings

Here's a clip from The Wire where D'angelo Barksdale is teaching the the young soldiers how to play chess after he finds them playing checkers on a chess board. He teaches them by likening the game to their life. If we take the same approach to our life where will we end up on the board?

The best Part of the clip is the thesis of "Why y'all playing checkers with a chess set?"

That is what most of us are doing by not looking at the bigger picture, and using the tools we have, to get the life that we want. We do shit like work at jobs we hate then just go to work, bust our ass and come home. Wake up...Repeat. All that Just to pay for the plasma that entertains us, and the car that makes us feel good driving to work. The game is not that your boss is king and you are not. The game is that you are the boss of your life and dreams. Work strategically to get the life, family and work of your dreams.

Jay Z Said...
Niggahz playing Checkers wid Chess playing Hov
This game is over I dunno if y'all know
You in a hole.

I Say: Get out of that hole. Invest in yourself, because if you don't your life belongs to someone else and when its over its over..and You dug the hole for yourself.

Bottom line is the Kings Stay Kings...Be the King of your own Life.

Getsome Update

For everyone looking for getsome radio. It will be up this evening about 7pm...

Thoughts: Box Boy to Billionaire

In the 3/18/07 edition of Ny Times Magazine they asked billionaire, financier, Ron Burkle some questions. Here's one that I found interesting...

NY Times Magazine: ...Although you’re selling off Pathmark to A.&P., you seem destined to be known as a supermarket guy:

Ron Burkle: I started out as a box boy. You know, I didn’t go to college, and I did well in supermarkets.

Now on the surface it was tame, but the way it seemed to me was that the interviewer tried to put "shame in his game" by implying that after all he's done he will go down just as a grocery store owner. But he shook her right off...

Like if it was in "real" talk it would've went down like this...

Ny Times: Although your are selling off your stores, we are never going to let you forget you were the grocery store boy.
Ron: Look here!- I started at the bottom and took over this shit... and quite frankly---MuthaF@#er, I'm rich!
